Clear Ears: Micro-Suction Ear Wax Removal in Wigan
Micro-suction is a technique for removing ear wax or debris using specialised magnification loupes (similar to the type dentists use). This allows the ear canal to be examined in detail. A very fine sterile suction device at low pressure is used to remove the wax.

My name is Debbie Watkinson and I have been a Registered Nurse working in the NHS for over 20 years. Throughout my nursing career I have developed a wide range of transferable skills and a wealth of experience. I have worked in a variety of clinical settings in both primary and secondary care and have expanded my knowledge and clinical skills through both training within the clinical environment and educational establishments.

Whilst working as a Nurse Practitioner within a busy NHS walk-in centre it became apparent that there was a community-based requirement for Ear Wax Removal. Impacted ear wax and its associated problems are a common presentation within the walk-in centre. Patients are often struggling to access local ear care services due to increasing demand and many GPs are no longer offering ‘ear syringing’ or ‘ear irrigation’ within their surgeries.

I originally trained in Ear irrigation in 2004 whilst working in general practice before undertaking further training in Micro-Suction Ear Wax removal in 2019. Clear Ears opened its doors in February 2019 and has since moved to a new purpose built clinic on Standish High Street in March 2022.

All Healthcare Professionals need to register with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) to provide Ear Wax removal procedures. Clear Ears was the first independent Ear Wax removal service in Wigan to successfully gain registration with the CQC, furthermore my latest inspection and ongoing fulfillment of registration requirements is testament to the high standard of care, safety and quality provided.
